IRELAND OCEAN RACING was launched In August 2017 under the management of 5 West Ltd, a leading sports consultancy, that has managed the programme of world renowned sailor Alex Thomson and Team Hugo Boss for over 15 years. The objective of Ireland Ocean Racing is to inspire and engage further Irish sailors into the incredible platform of offshore sailing.

Ireland Ocean Racing will continue to put offshore racing on the map for current and future generations of Irish sailors. Already many famous names, including  Joe English, Damian Foxall, Justin Slattery and Gordon Maquire have taken part and achieved incredible feats across a number of offshore sailing events. The ambition is to inspire other sailors to get involved, creating a clear pathway to deliver future champions.

In July 2018 and following the decision to open the Volvo Ocean Race to IMOCA 60 racing yachts, Ireland Ocean Racing initiated its campaign for the Irish entry in the 2021 edition. This is the perfect opportunity to bring some of Ireland’s most talented sailors front and centre in this internationally renowned event. It is exactly the project that Ireland Ocean Racing is equipped to deliver and aligns completely with its strategic aim

Ireland Ocean Racing has extensive experience with the Vendée Globe, the world’s only solo, non-stop and unassisted round the world sailing race. The company is currently helping some very talented sailors work towards competing in the 2020 and 2024 events. To date, no Irish sailor has completed this incredible sporting challenge.

Since 1973, the Volvo Ocean Race has provided the ultimate test of a team and a human adventure like no other. With more than eight months of competition, and a racecourse that is truly global, the Volvo Ocean Race is a unique international platform to drive business transformation.

The 2017-18 edition took the teams 45,000 nautical miles around the world, across four oceans, six continents and 12 landmark Host Cities.

The sport’s best sailors go up against each other across the world’s most treachorous waters. On board Reporters embedded with every team bring the fans inside the race where they can appreciate just how relentless the teams have to be, 24 hours a day in pursuit of a place on the prodium. This generates powerful content and stories and it is this emotional angle played out over 8/9 months that captivates allaudiences.

More than 2.5 million people visited the Race Villages in the last edition, to get a first-hand taste of the race. Millions more followed the action on the digital platforms as fans got closer than could ever possibly have imagined!

The up and coming 2021 edition is guaranteed to keep this momentum going, pushing limits faster and further and engaging the hearts and imaginations of fans across the globe.

The Vendee Globe is considered by many to be the ultimate test of extreme individual endurance.

It is a round the world, single-handed yacht race, sailed non stop and without assistance.

The race was founded in 1989 and has been sailed every 4 years since 1992.

The race starts and finished in Les Sables D’Olonne, France.

The race is competed in monohull IMOCA Open 60 class boats.

Since the start 138 sailors have lined up to take part and only 71 have managed to finish it.

This small and exclusive number signifies the difficulty of the event –

not only putting together the plans and getting the funding to take part but then

facing the varying extreme conditions and racing the other competitors in this truly epic event.

The last edition was held in 2016/17 and 29 sailors took part in this 8th edition of the race.

More than 680,000 people attended the race village before the start.

Alex Thomson has competed in this race 4 times. In the 2016 edition Alex Thomson
finished 2nd in the race, completed it in a record time of 74 days, 19 hours and

35 minutes breaking his own British record of 80 days.

The Vendee Globe is truly an exceptional event.
